  • I need a biology review. Wish I were back home with access to 3rd-grade books and to my 6th-grade niece. I'm sure she could easily answer these questions for me:

What is a living thing? Is a plant a living thing? If it is, why?

Anybody out there who knows the answer?

  • I sorta knew the answer but I checked on the web (ah, read... cheated...)

    What Makes Something Alive?
    • Living organisms
    – 1. Take in energy and/or nutrients from the
    environment
    – 2. Can sense and respond to the environment
    in controlled ways
    – 3. Can grow and reproduce
    – 4. Contain DNA and/or RNA
    – 5. Show homeostasis: the ability to regulate
the internal environment to keep it within
    certain limits
    – 6. Have the capacity to evolve.
